Harriet Hollister: Snow Above All

When it’s winter-time and all you see is grass and mud, but you’re wishing for snow and skiing, head to Harriet Hollister State Recreation Area. While you’re there look for my favorite trail: “Caution Hill’, and if you’re very quiet while you ski through the woods, you might catch a snow snake asleep in a tree branch, soaking up the sun, or maybe just a hungry deer.

Open year-round, the recreation area offers panoramic views, including Honeoye Lake. Because of its location/elevation, this recreation area gets more snow than many parks in the area, making it a mecca for winter sports enthusiasts. Trails, ranging in difficulty from novice to expert, are constructed, maintained, and groomed by the Rochester Cross Country Ski Foundation. Cross-country skiing teams often use Spencer for practice, and recreational groups can often be seen on a winter outing.

The park has one picnic pavilion, and offers hiking, cross-country skiing, and biking trails, and hunting. There are wide main trails to ski and skate on as well as lesser travelled wooded trails.

Named for the Rochester gardener, rose expert, and civic leader who donated the land, the Harriet Hollister Spencer Memorial Recreation Area is located on Canadice Hill on Canadice Hill Road in the southern part of the Town of Canadice in Ontario County.
