The Red Dove Tavern in Geneva

Geneva is a charming college town located at the north end of Seneca Lake. While researching some Finger Lakes history at the Prouty Chew House, we stopped at the Red Dove Tavern, a “gastropub” on Castle Street, in downtown Geneva.

The Shrimp Pil-Pil is spicy and delicious

Inside the Red Dove I was instantly reminded of the friendly tapas bars we frequented while in Barcelona’s Barre Gotic neighborhood. However unlike the limited fare at traditional tapas bars, The Red Dove’s mission is to “expand palettes.” The variety of items on the blackboard menu above the bar was tempting proof.

Smoked Mackerel is delicious but a challenge to eat

On tap at the Red Dove are 10 ever-changing micro-brews. There is one tap reserved for the Naked Dove Brewery in Canandaigua. (Are all doves naked?) They also have wine on tap from Finger Lakes wineries, as well as artisanal cocktails. Brunch features a variety of tasty drinks mixed from Cava, such as “The Bellini” —  ours featured a Blood Orange and Cava.

Thai Lemon Curry

We enjoyed a variety of small plates starting with shrimp pil-pil, fried chick peas, and smoked mackerel. Charlie enjoyed the Thai Lemon Curry. Their specialty is the Standard Burger, a burger with Philadelphia origins.

We asked why it was called the Red Dove and the friendly bartender gave us a quick history lesson.  The Red Dove is named after Arthur Dove, who is considered one of the founders of the American Modernist movement. Dove was born and raised in Geneva New York. Another interesting fact is that the owners of the Red Dove, like Arthur Dove, have Philadelphia roots.

Is it red because of the color or his lover?

Arthur Dove’s nickname for his long-time partner, Helen Torr, was “Reds.” I am not sure if that is where the Red in the tavern’s name came from or if it is because of the colorful lighting in the pub.

Just down the block from the pub is the “Dove Building. This was built and owned by Arthur’s father. Legend says that Arthur and Georgia O’Keefe roller skated inside this building. As an adult Dove returned to Geneva to settle his father’s estate and lived there for a short time. For more information.

The Red Dove is our favorite spot in the Finger Lakes! We have driven to Geneva from Easton PA 3 or 4 times a year just to have dinner. Even after our daughter graduated. We are already planning our spring trip.
